Overview
Most banks decide your rate for you. FitnessBank lets your feet do it. The app aggregates each customer's activity, sends a weekly report, and uses the daily step average to set the interest rate on their Fitness Savings Account. We built the product across Android, iOS and web, so the activity and the account sit in the same place.
Every Solution Needs a Problem to Begin With. For FitnessBank, It Was a Savings Rate That Ignored How People Actually Live.
Wellness became a daily habit measured in steps, streaks and weekly averages. Banking stayed on the other side of the wall. Savings rates came from the market and never from the customer's behaviour. FitnessBank wanted to pay for the habit itself. That meant wiring a step counter into a regulated savings product. Two systems built with no intention of ever meeting.
The Challenge
-
Fitness Data Integration
- Move activity data off the phone and into banking operations without breaking either side.
-
Averages You Can Bank On
- A rate decision rides on the step average, so the calculation had to hold up every day.
-
Health Data Security
- Personal health information needed protection wherever it was collected, stored or processed.
-
Regulatory Alignment
- FDIC rules and data privacy law shaped the first requirement, not the final review.
-
Customer Education
- A step based interest rate was new to everyone. It had to explain itself inside the app.
Project Challenges
In the development of the FitnessBank app, our team worked through these challenges:
-
Feeding phone level activity data into regulated banking workflows that expect clean, auditable input every day.
-
Calculating daily step averages consistently enough to justify the rate sitting on a customer's savings account.
-
Protecting sensitive health and account data at every point across mobile, web and backend processing.
Project Solutions
Our team answered each challenge with decisions that were practical rather than clever.
-
One activity tracking flow, built natively for Android and iOS, behaving exactly the same way on both platforms.
-
A backend that processes and stores activity data next to account data, with security written into the architecture.
-
Screens that show the current step average and what it means for the customer's rate, in plain numbers.
